Abhishek Agarwal asked:

For a good game of golf not only we should be well informed about the golf ball and golf club but very essential is a good and comfortable pair of golf shoes. Like any other out door game for golf too we need to remember that proper pair of golf shoe is a must. In a golf course a golfer need to move around on a vast landscape which will require good shoes. Golfers require pair of golf shoes to get good grip to the ground while movement during the swing. Good golf shoes provide a lot of support during the game and also make the golfer feel comfortable and enjoy his game. It helps the golfer to feel confident while he can comfortably play. For a start following are the few tips provided to choose the best golf shoe.

1. Right material for the footwear is important.

First and foremost for any shoes you pick on for golf you need to really think first about the material with what the shoe is made of. Again choice of material depends on the money you can invest like polyester footwear can be a better choice for people who are careful with money. Polyester shoes are better option as they are less priced than other materials for golf shoes , but it might not be used for a longer period of time as this material has short lifespan. Polyester when compared to other material is much light in weight and also less in thickness so it is real good choice for hot season. on the other hand shoes made of leather are also a good choice as they can be used for a longer period and are lets the air in and out and surely very relaxing. But leather shoes have to be taken care off so that it can be used for a longer period. But finally if you are looking out for a shoe which has got balanced characteristics of affordability, comfort and if u wants them for a longer period then Gore-Tex is one you can choose. This material though provides ok leek when compared to a leather shoes but it is rain proof material.

2. Choosing the right spike sole.

In golf game you have to be careful not to slide away while you swing. So shoes with spiked sole become very important as they help the golfer to stand still and not slip away from the ground. In any spiked shoe you will notice these spikes around the base of the toes and at the heel and their length will be approximately 3-4 centimeters. Most often these spikes are made of metal but golfers can always choose those spiked shoes where the spikes are made of plastic as this might help in minimal damage to the golf field. Some golf shoes are replaced by grooves for spikes and can be used by golfers during the summer season as they help again in providing good base of support for the golfer. Golfers who are already suffering with knee injuries and ankle injuries can choose to wear grooved shoes as these shoes provide base of support while the player is in action. But over all if you want to choose the best from the lot then plastic spiked shoes will be the best choice. An important thing which you will have to keep in mind about the plastic spiked shoe is that every time you check for the plastic spiked sole as it can get damaged when used constantly and will need to be replaced. If you are prompt with replacing the damaged spike then you can have a better game always.

Another most important factor that is required to select a golf shoe is buy the correct size for your feet and remember what so ever you decide to buy a good golf shoes should be first very comfortable and then you can enjoy your golf game and play it better.

I have been golfing for about about 5 years now. I have become somewhat consistent. I have, however, been hitting the links in the Nikes that I used to run 5Ks in. I’m now in the market for a quality pair of golf shoes. Are Foot Joys the only way to go?

John Whelan asked:

As you venture out to the local golf course for the first time there are a few things you should know that will make your first experience a great one.

The Tee Time is when your first stroke or drive is made from the Tee Box, so make sure you phone ahead to reserve your tee time and get to the golf course a good half hour early. Reserving the tee time a day ahead or even a few days ahead will assure you of getting the time you want, it all depends on which day and what time you choose.

If a tee time is missed, your group might have to wait around for another opening, which can take hours on a busy day. Tee times are not always required but having one is a good idea. Getting to the course early is an advantage for you; spend the time wisely by hitting a few balls on the driving range and putting on the practice putting green.

Know the Dress Code

Many golf courses have dress codes so you should inquire at the club house and dress appropriately. A pair of dress shorts or slacks and a collared golf shirt will almost always meet the requirements, but it is a good idea to check ahead of time. Golf shoes are usually not required depending on how private and upscale the golf course is. Golf gloves are up to the golfer, both golf shoes and gloves are an advantage to any golfer no matter how much experience they have.

Is Tipping required?

If you are just starting out you will most likely be playing at a municipal golf course where tipping is almost never an issue. If playing a private, semiprivate or upscale public course, you may have to tip the cart jockeys who carry your equipment for you to your vehicle or to your cart. You may also have to tip the beverage cart driver who brings you that cold beer or ice water, the tip amount depends on you or how classy the course is relative to the green fees.

Equipment Rules and Etiquette

There are some rules regarding golf equipment, the most obvious one is a limit of 14 clubs in each bag of each player. There is no minimum number of clubs which may lead a player to borrow a club, this is considered poor etiquette and golf rules dictate this unless there are acceptable circumstances. The best rule of thumb is when buying clubs get a complete set of 14 clubs, you will be very glad you did.

Your first time out you want to have lots of extra golf balls and tees, it is almost guaranteed you will be losing a lot of balls. Proper golf etiquette also includes repairing the course surface caused by you or any golfer for that matter. Ballmarks must be repaired using a ballmark repair tool and repairing the divot or chunk of sod you sliced out of the ground. Ballmark tools are small devices that can be found for a couple of bucks at most pro shops and are usually used on the greens.

So there you have it, some basic golf rules and etiquette you need to know before venturing out to the local golf course. The rules are usually posted in and outside of the clubhouse and involve using some common sense, dress respectably and leave the course the way you found it.

The main rule is to have some fun!

Max Johnson asked:

Is it time to replace your golf cart bag? Depending how much you play, the golf cart bag is a very important piece of golf equipment. The reasons are simple. Obviously, it is very important because it assists you with the storage and transportation of your golf clubs as well as other golf equipment.

With the size of a golf cart bag, you can easily carry your clubs, tees, markers as well as other things you will need during your round of golf. The bag itself does not necessarily have a direct correlation to your score however, it can allow you to carry items that could make your round of golf more comfortable and more enjoyable for you.

The basic golf bag comes in three sizes. The first is a staff golf bag or tour golf bag. Obviously, this name comes from the professionals that are on staff with a certain company to promote the company’s products. The second is the golf cart bag. These bags are typically not quite as large as a staff or tour bag and are meant to be placed on the rear of a golf cart. These golf bags are not meant to be carried by the average player during their round of golf.

A golf stand carry bag can be used on the back of a golf cart as well as carried by the player during the round. These bags are typically about 4 pounds in weight prior to adding your golf equipment. Depending on the golf you usually play, any one of these styles can suit your needs.

In determining the kind of golf bag will best suit you and the type of golf that you play, you need to first decide if you walk or ride most of your rounds of golf. If you walk the majority of your rounds, you will need a golf stand carry bag. You may choose to also have a cart golf bag for trips or special occasions. In addition, you will need to think about your typical golf club and how your golf clubs are normally transported about the club.

Do you have to personally carry them quite a bit or is the staff able to assist you with your bag? I think that you get the drift, the more that you carry your own clubs the more you need a golf stand carry bag.

The golf stand carry bag is a smaller bag designed for those who are prone to walk the golf course or have to transport their own clubs around the club. These lightweight golf bags are designed for the players comfort as they are carried by the player. Although these bags are light weight they can hold a full set of golf clubs (fourteen), golf balls, range finder GPS unit, tees, umbrella as well as a rain suit. These bags typically have room for a pair of golf shoes for when you travel.

The staff/tour bag is the largest selection of golf bags which is available, they are much larger that the travel/carry bag or the cart golf bag. You see the professional golfers on TV use these golf bags. However, they do not personally carry them due to their weight. They travel with caddies to help them instead. The amount of equipment that these golfers can carry is as much as they would like and an average PGA Tour Bag is 40-45 lbs with all the equipment in it. The price for the staff tour bags is substantially higher than that of the cart golf bag or the travel/carry bag.

The golf cart bag is a smaller version of the tour bag. Again, these bags are deigned to ride on the back of a golf cart. The pockets are typically designed for easy access as the bag sits on a golf cart.

Determine your golfing habits and with this information make an informed decision on which bag would best suit you and allow you to enjoy the great game of golf.

Pius Victor Ephenus asked:

Almost all sports require the participants to wear certain clothes and in this golf is no different. To be sure you do not fall foul of these restrictions you will need to get the best type of clothing from a specialist store. Golf courses differ in many areas including their accepted dress code so make sure you are aware of this before you begin as it will help you enjoy the experience more. Some golf course will actually stop a player from enjoying a round of golf if he is considered inappropriately attired. This can be highly frustrating and leave you quite upset at the end of the day if you are stopped from playing golf simply because of a misunderstanding on appropriate clothing.

Several things about men and boys are unwelcome on the golf course. Men (and boys) are not permitted to wear shirts without collars or sleeves at any time. Another area that is a no-no is the use of running pants and shoes that have metal studs. Many people have fallen foul of the offensive clothing rule where the have an item of clothing that has an obnoxious or offensive logo on it. Additionally wearing jeans or sandals are not allowed, even for women.

The most proper men’s attire on the golf course happens to be collared shirts, the right pair of pants or shorts and golf or athletic shoes. A pair of golf shoes when worn must only have the soft spike type and not metal owing to the lawn damage that is caused by them. Your shirts can either have long or short sleeves and there is no problem with turtlenecks or pullover sweaters. The trend in wearing trainer socks has not be taken up by the golfing fraternity so socks should be of regular length and preferably plain.

For women playing golf, fitting shirts and skirts and even Capri’s are allowed. Generally, women are barred from wearing pants of any type including jeans shorts. The length of the skirt or short is important for women and they have to ensure that it is not more than 5 inches above the knee. However each golf course is guided by its own specific rules and guidelines in the matter. Women would also need to wear collared shirts unless they are sporting a pull over with a V-style neck.

Women golfers are allowed sleeveless shorts with collars or shirts with either long or short sleeves. Their socks must be ankle length with proper golf shoes (or sports) and if they wish a hat or visor if they prefer. Socks ought to be solid colored and should not have any objectionable logos or designs on them. Not to bring the club into disrepute and to be fair, the same rules apply to any guest you may take along for a round. If you are unsure about your clubs rules on dress, give them a quick call or check out their website before you go.

Scott Cole asked:

Copyright (c) 2009 Scott Cole

To help increase the power of your golf swing, your first focus should be on improving your balance. This is the most overlooked key to increasing the power of the golf swing.

I trained for eight years in the martial art of Pai Lum Kung Fu, and proper balance was stressed throughout my training, from my days as a beginner student, and even beyond when I attained 1st Degree Black Belt. However, in our training, we focused on every possible detail regarding balance, from the feet, to proper stance width, posture and center of gravity. These are all important keys to developing power in our Kung Fu techniques, and they are important keys to helping golfers develop more power in their golf swings as well.

In describing the swing of J.B. Holmes, noted golf instructor David Leadbetter has this to say…” Starting down, his legs get into a squat position, which lets him use the ground as resistance and create an unbelievable energy flow from his legs, up through his shoulders and down into his arms and the club.”

Using the ground as resistance and the creation of energy flow from the legs are two important components we focused on for generating power in our techniques at the kung fu school.

To increase the power in our punching techniques, my teacher often stressted getting our feet rooted into the ground. We devote an entire breathing exercise that lasts about five minutes to this concept of rooting. Later in our training, we were taught to focus on a specific spot on the bottom of our foot where our balance will be rooted into the ground. This spot will also draw energy from the earth into our body, and then we learn how to transfer this energy into our technique. When you develop this ability, you become capable of generating incredible bower with minimal movement.

To locate this specific spot on the bottom of your foot, take a moment to sit down, and take off your shoes and socks. On the bottom of your feet you will notice thick pads, that are often described as the balls of the feet. The biggest of these pads is under the area beneath the big toe. Next to this large pad is an area that looks like a small hollow. Take your thumb and push into this hollow firmly. If you feel a nice jolt of pain, you have found the right spot! If not, keep searching until you feel that bit of pain. In Chinese medicine, this spot is known as Kidney Point 1, and it is viewed as a very significant healing point, even for a heart attack victim.

Now that we have identified this point, we want to take this information and transfer it into our golf swing. So, with your shoes off, find a spot on a hard floor and get into your golf stance (without a club of course). As you get yourself set into your golf stance, focus hard on these specific points in the bottom of your feet. These are the points where you should focus your balance.

Now I want you to feel a sort of corkscrewing motion, starting with that spot in the bottom of your feet, then feel it up into your knees, then into your hips. You should feel as if you are trying to screw the bottom of your foot into the ground, and then the hips tuck under your torso, and maybe move forward a little bit (we also refer to this as a curling of the hips). Practice a few times at home with your shoes off, then try getting that same feeling with your golf shoes on (preferably not indoors or you will have some damaged floors!). You see, it is absolutely critical that you engage the hips in your golf swing, particularly at the start of your downswing. Engaging the hips in this manner will help them clear out the path for the golf club more quickly, generating more power.

Posture also plays a significant role in developing proper balance. Although we want to feel as if we are rooted into the ground like a tree, we certainly do not want to stand straight up in our golf stance, nor do we want to be bent over too far in our stance. Generally speaking, if we draw a straight line up from the ground to the sky at the back our hips, we then want to be bent at the hips so that our spine is angled about 30 degrees from that straight line. Find a photo of Tiger Woods’ stance and you have a perfect picture of what I describe. This stance allows the arms plenty of room to swing freely in the golf swing.

Finally, it is important to maintain a low center of gravity throughout your golf swing. You will often hear football announcers describe how a running back is difficult to tackle because he has a low center of gravity. The martial artist looks to develop that low center of gravity as well, in order to generate power in his punches. The golfer will lose power by rising up in his/her golf swing.

To make sure you keep your center of gravity as low as possible, it is important to learn how to relax your abdomen during the golf swing. In other words, let your gut sag instead of sucking it in! This will require you to learn how to breathe so that you fill up all three levels of your lungs (lower, middle, upper), rather than just the upper level of your lungs. By learning how to breathe in this manner, you will learn how to maintain a low center of gravity even while holding your breath at the beginning of the swing (you should learn how to exhale during the downswing).

Once you learn to combine proper balance and posture this way, you will increase the power of your golf swing.
